The magic here is in the rotation of the gears. In the lever's other position, the gear chain is S, A, C, D (with B idling). When the lever is in the idle position, the chain is broken and no power is transmitted. So the reverse tumbler gear is in one position, power goes down this path: S, A, B, C, D. Normally they would remain engaged and the reverse tumbler lever left in neutral. The bracket on the bottom is rotated such that the leftmost gear (D) engages C.
